wedding brings thousands of guests

A Hasidic wedding organized in a synagogue in New York caused controversy: it brought together thousands of  people on November 8, 2020. All the health rules in force having been flouted, the city authorities decided to crack down: the synagogue Yetev Lev from the Williamsburg neighborhood was sentenced on November 24 to a fine of $ 15,000 . If such facts happened again, the authorities could order the site to be closed. “ We do not know the exact number of people, but what we are certain is that there were too many people, ” Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a press briefing on Tuesday. "It appears that there was a very deliberate effort to cover up the event, which makes things even more unacceptable, "he added. For New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, he This is a “blatant disregard for the law.” He called for an investigation into the illegal gathering.

In France, no gatherings, festive events, or room rental

If sanitary conditions allow, confinement can be lifted during the second stage, on December 15. It will then be replaced by a curfew from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.,  except on the evenings of December 24 and 31 to allow families to reunite for Christmas and New Years. However, the number of people should remain limited. Emmanuel Macron wished to recall that large gatherings remain prohibited and that "unnecessary travel" will have to be limited. From January 20, bars and restaurants will be able to open again depending on the health situation. During this period when the measures are lightened, large gatherings and festive events in the rooms to be rented will remain prohibited, specifies the President. Weddings bringing together relatives are therefore not yet topical, since the government's objective is to " limit all activities which increase the number of gatherings and lead people to gather in closed places".

Emmanuel Macron announced on November 24 that places of worship could, from November 28, accommodate up to 30 people . After several discussions and negotiations, this gauge - deemed "unrealistic" - should ultimately change depending on the health situation and the size of places of worship, probably from December 15, said Prime Minister Jean Castex.

On November 7, the deputies adopted the extension of the state of health emergency until February 16 , by 154 votes for and 38 against, during the final reading of the text. The state of health emergency may however be lifted in advance in the event of an improvement in the situation. For the time being, festive weddings bringing together the whole family are therefore suspended until further notice.

What are the risks of being infected at a marriage?

The CovidTracker site calculates the risk of meeting a person infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus while going to a restaurant at a party or a wedding. By entering the virus incidence rate for the department or the metropolitan area in the calculator, data available on the site, and the number of people present, the risk is estimated in the form of a probability. For example, for a marriage with 150 people in Nantes, the probability of meeting at least one person carrying the virus is 39%, 75% in Strasbourg and 22% in Brest.

Why are marriages prohibited?

Emmanuel Macron had already been clear on October 15: "we are in a worrying situation and we must react to slow the spread of the virus," the President said. He therefore wanted the French to reduce their private contacts, in  particular "the moments of conviviality where one risks becoming infected ". According to him,  private dates, parties and birthdays, as well as festive evenings, such as weddings, are accelerating moments.  In a column published on September 13 in the Journal du Dimanche, six doctors wished to point out the risks of contagion from private parties. "We doctors are not in the injunction. But we have to take care of each other and maybe whistle the end of recess. Avoid private gatherings as much as possible. The smaller a room, the more people it contains, the less airy it is, and the more you increase the risks, "they wrote. In addition, according to health authorities, these family and festive gatherings where we meet in joy are often the occasion to forget the barrier gestures.
